Many of my clients wonder if they should wait until their kids are older to take a vacation to Disney. While bringing a younger child does require more upfront details to plan (that is where we can help!) and may require the ability to adjust plans on the fly, we have found that there are lots of benefits to bringing children under 3 to Disney and have some planning tips to make it easier!
Disney was created for the young (and young at heart)
Even for a toddler, there is so much to do and more importantly - they will love it! There are many rides with no height requirements, so your little one can ride with you. There are also parades, attractions, and character meet and greets that are sure to appeal to the younger set! Plus, it gives you an excuse to hang out on the “kiddie” rides! And, let’s face it, character meet and greets are more fun with the kids!
Making Memories
I know younger children may not remember the trip firsthand, but you will! And, new experiences for your little one still helps shape their minds while learning in a new environment! Plus, they can always relive the memories through the pictures you take and the stories you tell when you get home. We absolutely loved our Disney trips when our daughters were young, and are so glad we took them then! It really is easier than you think – be prepared to take a break for a nap or some down time here and there (our daughters would just sleep in their strollers), but know that you will still be creating magical memories as a family.
It’s Free!
You do not need to pay admission for children under the age of 3, so you are able to bring them with you for no additional charge! Since children under three don’t require a park ticket, they also don’t need a FastPass. As long as you have a FastPass for yourself, and they meet the height requirement, they will be able to ride with you (Make sure to research and take advantage of Rider Switch as well). Also, children under three are able to share your meals, so you don’t have an extra food expense, which can be great at character meals!
A few things we learned on our trips with our daughters when they were young:
- Choose a couple of favorite Disney Movies to watch before you go to get them excited! Not sure where to start – we have you covered here
- Disney has Baby Care Centers to help you with feeding and diaper changing – they are equipped with rockers, swings, high chairs, toys, videos, essentials (for purchase), and air conditioning!
- Use a Stroller and invest in a rain cover and stroller fan. You can bring your own stroller, or rent one. You can learn more about your stroller options here.
- Bring an empty bag to throw everything into at the end of the day.
- Don’t over do it! It’s important to rest in order to get the best trip experience and avoid potential meltdowns.
- Bring plenty of snacks – many people don’t realize you are allowed to bring food into the park. Just make sure they’re not in glass containers (unless it’s baby food)
- If you don’t have older kids, take advantage of not having to work around school schedules and take your trip during the “off season”
- Our favorite stays when our kids were young were at a resort along the monorail
- Take advantage of the washer and dryer on your resort property - and be sure to bring laundry pods for ease
- Get your iconic picture early in the day in case of a meltdown or sleeping child
