Most Disney fans are very familiar with the four major theme parks, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. However, even the more seasoned theme park goers often times forget about the other two theme parks offered at Walt Disney World, Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Both are highly themed waterparks that offer a full day of fun and sun!
Blizzard Beach is themed as a mountain ski resort, with slopes of various thrill levels and even a chairlift that will take you to the top of Mount Gushmore for a near vertical drop on one of the world’s tallest and fastest free-fall body slides, Summit Plummet. For those looking for something a little less intimidating, there are many other slides that are sure to add excitement to your day! If something a little more relaxing is what you had in mind, floating down Cross Country Creek in a tube around the entire park, swimming in the waves, or relaxing on the shores of Melt-Away Bay (a one-acre wave pool) may be just what you need after long days of walking at the other theme parks!
Typhoon Lagoon is a tropical paradise that offers one of the largest wave pools in North America, as well as Crush ‘n’ Gusher, a multi passenger roller coaster-like raft ride and the new, Miss Adventure Falls, a family, raft-style attraction. Both water parks offer play areas for younger children and slides that are just the right thrill level for those guests who are little less adventurous. The Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool is Typhoon Lagoon’s wave pool where you can experience six-foot swells, alternating with smaller bobbing waves. For stronger swimmers, this is sure to be a blast! If you don’t consider yourself a strong swimmer, be sure to grab a life jacket before attempting to ride the waves or wait for the larger waves to pass. Prior to park opening on select days, beginners can get started learning to surf and experienced surfers can improve their form in small classes provided by professional instructors. The classes have limited availability, and are offered for guests ages 8 and up, for an additional fee.
Before venturing to either of Disney’s water parks for a relaxing day of fun in the sun, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Disney buses do provide transportation from the resorts to the water parks, however, often times it is not a direct route. Be sure to check with the front desk of your resort for the most efficient route to the water parks.
- Be sure you have the right type of ticket in your package that allows you entry into the water parks. Your On The Road Travel agent can assist in making sure you have included the water park option in your vacation package.
- During the winter months, the water parks do close for annual refurbishment, so be sure to check their operating schedule before travel.
- If you are on a Disney dining plan, your quick service meal and snack credits can be used at both Disney water parks.
- Towels are available for rent at both water parks, as well as lockers to protect your valuables.
- Life jackets are complimentary and are located at several locations around both water parks.
- For the best chance of getting a seat in the shade, arrive early.
- If you happen to forget the sunscreen or need swimsuits, goggles or other must-haves, these items are available for purchase at the waterparks.
- Alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not permitted at either Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon.
